Your Child and Internet Security

To keep your child safe while they are using the internet it is important to understand how they can be hurt. Predators use certain places on the internet to gather information about potential victims. Your child knows, from school, never to give out personally identifiable information, such as their name, age, city, birth date, school, or telephone number. They also not permitted to use internet protocols that could cause them harm.

We recommend monitoring your child's use of email and chat (and games that use a chat system for in-game communication). Such games include Runescape and World of Warcraft. While the games themselves may be appropriate for you child (depending on your child's age) you should closely monitor your child while they play and help them maintain their security. Make sure you have your child's email name and password and check their email accounts frequently. Record and monitor their chat.

Tools for Internet Monitoring

Although the best method to help your child stay secure on the internet is first-hand monitoring (sitting next to them while they use the internet) this is not always possible.
